Steve and Eleven AU

He remembered the day back in the lab when everyone got killed, except for him and his sister. They had been separated for quite a while now since he was adopted by a family called the Harrington's. Not that his parents were ever around so he could still do what he wanted, even if half of the things he did was considered dangerous. His powers were still growing, he mostly used them to play basketball better at this point. Even though the last few times he helped his friends fight off the Demogorgon. Those creatures sucked, but they were defeated even if he didn't realize his sister was around then.

He was spending time with Nancy and Dustin today, trying to keep himself busy. A few people knew about his abilities, but he trusted Dustin with his life even if the other was just a kid. He always felt safe. Even Nancy and Jonathan protected him a lot, which he was a bit thankful for. His friend looked like wanted to tell him something. "What's going on Dustin, it seems you have something on your mind?" He asked as they continued to walk, he really didn't feel like driving today even though he loved his car.

"I found out that El is back, Mike told me. She's staying with Hopper." Steve felt relieved that his sister came back, he thought she was dead. Is that why they were heading that way towards Hopper's cabin? Makes complete sense. It wasn't that far away and it didn't take him that long to get there. He knocked on Hopper's door hoping the other would at least let him inside.

[ Mom and Will aren't home. She took Will to the doctor (for perfectly normal reasons, thank God, like having something as minor as a cold) then on her errand trips. Bank, groceries, the sort of thing. There was an offer to go with or to drive them but Joyce insisted it would be painfully boring. She also didn't want to drag Eleven in somewhere like a doctor's office, mindful it may be an unpleasant reminder, when it was completely unnecessary. It's also way too hot to have them waiting in the car. It's always hot here and he wears too many layers, doesn't he?

Eleven wouldn't be left alone and she's not because he's here. He's used to being home alone over the years while those two weren't home. He's used to being awake while the others aren't too. Jonathan Byers had a lot of time where he was just by himself. But they moved to California as a family of four and for the first time in a really long time he's very much not by himself.

It's not unwelcomed by any means, just a new peculiarity. Eleven is more than welcome in his life. She saved Wills, all of theirs, and she deserves to rest now. To be a normal kid. To be loved. The door was open to come in, even if very few people had bothered take the hurdles to get over his walls. Nancy bulldozed her way in with a gun.

Obviously she's closer to Will. They're the same age, have the same friends, they share these little looks that say so much. Any outsider probably thinks they're twins without context. Mom, in all her ways, has given this girl every ounce of affection she can offer from the day she met Eleven because that's who she is. They also share this fondness and loss that he can't be part of, that shows itself in little sad quips about something Hopper might have done. The three of them are obviously close.

But he's... They get along. They get along great, he'd say. But Eleven has been around for years in their lives at this point and he doesn't actually think they've talked. Exchanged full sentences without Will or Joyce in the room. Have they had a conversation? He wants to know her, to support her, to be a brother but he hadn't wanted to force it. She's so very strong but also fragile. Like Will. He lets Will speak first unless the situation calls for him to press. He hasn't needed to press, has he? They're both so painfully quiet. She's a girl of very few words and he's a thinker that lets everyone else lead the conversation. It's not a bad thing to be in comfortable silence. It can be good even. But he has no idea if she'd slap the word 'comfortable' on this. Does she like him? Is there enough of him in her life to even formulate an option other than 'the other guy in my house' 'Joyce's son' 'Will's brother' 'Nancy's boyfriend'? So here they are, in their silence as the car pulls out of the driveway for the day. Their first time alone. He faces the window like he's watching the car leave while his eyes are turned to watch her from the corner of them, biting one of his finger nails in thought.

Yeah, silence isn't it. He missed out on getting to know Bob better. He can't stand this... distance with someone that's supposed to be family. ]
